Youth team host Lord Mayor and unveil new music studio

Our Youth team hosted Youth Connect last week, welcoming the Lord Mayor of Manchester as he unveiled their new music studio.

Taking place at Woodhouse Lifestyle Centre, the event was open to members of the community and young people, showcasing the hard work the Youth team put in every day to support the young people of Wythenshawe.

The new music studio was the star of the event, unveiled by the Lord Mayor of the City of Manchester, Councillor Paul Andrews. The studio went through a revamp with input from the young people at the centre and will now be used as part of the Youth team’s sessions.

He said: “It’s a great honour to be opening the re-launch of Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre Music Studio in such a significant venue and I am really delighted to see so many friends and familiar faces. I know WCHG Youth’s team are very proud to be able to now give so many young people alongside community members the chance to access such a fantastic space.

“It was a great way of bringing the young people and community together to do something enjoyable, constructive and positive, it’s a new way of interacting, through helping young people open up and express themselves through their music, and their creativity.”

The aim of the new music studio to provide opportunities for young people to develop their musical skills, including singing, music design, playing instruments, DJ-ing and podcasting. The studio will also be available to use by the local community, providing those same opportunities to the people of Wythenshawe.

Samantha Maunder, Neighbourhood Youth Manager, shared: “It was a fantastic afternoon and great to see so many familiar and new faces come together taking part in the activities, from making dream catchers to playing basketball.

“The opening of the music studio has been well overdue for the centre, and for the young people. We have so many talented young people in Wythenshawe, and it’s great to be able to provide them with an amazing space that they feel comfortable in and that they are part of. They can learn new skills, and who knows? We could have the next big star within our sessions.”

We provide youth sessions at Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre every Thursday and Friday, 6-8pm, which are inclusive for ages 11-18. On Tuesday night, the session is for 11-25 years for young people with Special Educational Needs and Abilities (SEND) only. We also have WOW sessions every Tuesday and Wednesday for ages 8-11 years from 3.30pm-5pm.
