Real Food Geodome Wins Sustainability Award
The Real Food Wythenshawe Project has won a national PACE Award for Environmental Sustainability in partnership with The Manchester College.
PACE awards are open to individuals, departments, schools and colleges that have introduced outstanding learning initiatives or techniques over the last 12 months.
The Geodome is Real Food Wythenshawe’s ‘Living Classroom’ and is situated at the back of the Manchester College’s Brownley Road Campus
The partnership between Real Food Wythenshawe and The Manchester College supports learners through various routes including:
• Outdoor education and sustainability workshops for The Manchester College students, local primary and secondary school children & community groups
• Volunteering opportunities
• L2 catering students ‘College showcase’ – Catering students engaging with the public via the Real Food Demo kitchen in Wythenshawe Market, showcasing their skills
• Catering students volunteering at the Demo Kitchen in Wythenshawe Town centre.
The Geodome also grows food for the catering department within the College and creates its own fertilisers with all suitable food waste being composted. They are also vermicomposting with the worm castings utilised as plant food, and another big nutrient source is the waste from the fish tanks in the aquaponics system.
Jacqueline Naraynsingh, Real Food Programme Manager said, “We are absolutely over the moon to win this award as its testament to everyone involved in this fantastic project! The Geodome enhances awareness of the connections between food, health and climate change and it allows students to experience the natural world around them whilst getting involved with outdoor learning activities.”
