Lord Mayor Presents Cheque to Bideford Community Centre
The Bideford Community Centre in Baguley, Wythenshawe has been presented with a cheque for £1,398 by Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Susan Cooley.
The donation, which is from the Lord Mayor’s ‘We Love Manchester’ Charity Appeal Trust, will go towards much-needed new furniture and equipment for the centre.
Local Bideford Community Centre volunteers Kirsty Taylor, Chair and Eric Smith, Secretary, welcomed the Lord Mayor to the centre where she joined local residents and volunteers for a hot lunch and even did a stint calling out the numbers in their bingo session.
The centre is well-used by local people and a regular hub of social events for all ages. Volunteers provide a whole range of activities – from bingo sessions, toddler groups and social events, to the recent addition of the ‘Bideford Boutique’ clothing bank.
Wythenshawe Community Housing Group is committed to empowering local people through community investment. Nigel Wilson, Group Chief Executive of WCHG said; “WCHG’s Real Neighbours Team support local volunteers to deliver projects and help meet local need for local people. The Bideford Centre is an excellent example of what can be achieved by working in partnership with local communities.”
Kirsty Taylor, Chair of the Bideford Centre and a recent recipient of Manchester City Council’s ‘Be Proud’ Award for her volunteering work said, “We are very honoured to receive this cheque from the Lord Mayor. She has a long association with our centre and is a great supporter of volunteers and the contribution that they make to local communities. We are delighted with the donation and we will certainly put it to good use.”
