Building on Success – New Homes for Wythenshawe
Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) has been successful in achieving over £4.3m of grant funding to build 289 new homes over the next four years through the governments Homes and Communities Agency’s Affordable Homes Programme which aims to increase the supply of new affordable homes in England from 2015-2018.
This represented 100% of the bid made and brings the total of new homes to be built in Wythenshawe by WCHG over the next four years to more than 500. The new homes will be built at 13 different locations and will include homes for sale, affordable rent and shared ownership.
Nigel Wilson, Group Chief Executive of Wythenshawe Community Housing Group said; “This is great news for the people of Wythenshawe. Good quality affordable housing is in great demand and we are keen to provide residents with a range of options to suit their pockets. We have already had some very successful shared ownership schemes and we look forward to developing these homes for sale alongside our more traditional affordable homes for rent.”
Last year WCHG built 117 homes across Wythenshawe, including shared ownership to help people get a foot on the property ladder and also some bungalows for people wishing to down-size or find more suitable accommodation for their changing needs.
Mr and Mrs Walker moved into their new 2-bedroom bungalow a couple of months ago - just down the road from where they used to live. They said, “We love our new home. We decided to down-size because we had a 3 bedroomed family home and we really needed something a bit smaller and more suited to our current needs. We didn’t want to move far and this bungalow is just down the road from our old home so we couldn’t be happier.”
Wythenshawe Community Housing Group was created in April 2013 to provide a group structure for Willow Park and Parkway Green Housing Trusts in Wythenshawe. The Group was created to build on the strengths of both Trusts for the tenants it serves. The Group now manages 14,000 homes, employs over 500 people.
