Trees in Wythenshawe

We look after around 14,000 trees in Wythenshawe. These trees, along with our green spaces, make our area a 'Garden City'. We care for these trees to keep the environment healthy and to bring benefits to everyone.

Why trees matter

Trees do a lot of good for Wythenshawe and the people who live here:

  • They give shade on hot days, keeping us cool.
  • They help with flooding by slowing down rainwater before it reaches drains and rivers.
  • They clean the air by removing pollution and giving us fresh oxygen.
  • They boost our health and happiness, providing places to walk, exercise, and relax. Just seeing trees can help people feel better and recover faster when they’re unwell.
  • They are homes for wildlife, providing food and shelter for birds, insects, and other animals.

Looking after trees

Sometimes, we need to trim or remove a tree. We only do this if a tree is dead, dying, diseased, or dangerous.

How to spot a problem tree:

  • Dead trees

- No leaves when other trees have them.

- Dry, crumbling branches.

- Large patches of missing bark.

- No new buds or growth.

- Mushrooms or fungi growing on them.

  • Dying trees

- Leaves are falling off when they shouldn’t.

- Leaves turning yellow or brown too soon.

- Cracks or damage to the trunk.

- Weak growth.

  • Diseased trees

- Leaves look odd or discoloured.

- Insects or pests living on them.

- Fungi or dead bark.

- Sticky or leaking sap.

  • Dangerous trees

- Leaning over too much or looking like they might fall.

- Large dead branches hanging over paths or roads.

- Big cracks or holes in the trunk.

- Roots lifting pavements or damaging buildings.

- Damaged by storms or strong winds.
